Happy First Day of Fall!

Fall is here, which means it’s time to start preparing for colder weather!

As the days get shorter and summer begins to fade, the weather will inevitably start to cool down. This can be great time of year to enjoy the outdoors –  brisk morning walks, outdoor sports, and colourful landscapes are all staples of the fall season. But for many of us, the best part of autumn isn’t being outside, but snuggling up under a blanket with a hot drink and riding out the cold weather indoors. If you’re looking for ways to stay cozy this season, here are a few tips on how to keep your apartment toasty warm as the temperatures drop!

Heavy Curtains

Other than being a nice addition to your apartment decor, heavy curtains can be a great way to keep heat trapped in your home. Thermal-lined curtains can be purchased at most home decorating stores for a low cost, and they can make an enormous difference in the temperature of your home. Remember to keep them open on sunny days to warm up your apartment, and close them at night to trap the heat inside. If you’re considering installing new curtains, please make sure to check with your building manager first!

Weather-Stripping

If you notice a draft coming in through your windows or from under your doors, weather-stripping may be a good way to block out the cold air. Ask your building manager to come look at your unit and see if new weather-stripping would be a good option for your apartment. If weather stripping isn’t possible, consider making your own draught excluder to keep heat trapped inside. Layers

‘Tis the season for cozy sweaters, big blankets, and warm socks! If you find yourself getting chilly around the house, throw on a fleece sweater or a pair of fuzzy socks. Not only will layers help to keep you warm, but they’ll make you feel much more festive, too!

Flannel Sheets

If you feel the cold most when you’re trying to sleep, you might want to consider changing out your regular sheets for flannel or fleece. Layering your bedding can help keep you warm too – add a quilted bed cover to your mattress or layer a few cushions, blankets or throws on your bed for additional warmth.

Covering Bare Floors

Stepping onto cold hardwood or tile floors is one of the worst parts of waking up on a chilly autumn morning. To avoid this, consider adding area rugs to those places where you most often put your feet down – the space beside your bed, the bathroom floor, and the area next to the kitchen sink are all great places to add a little extra warmth.

Seasonal Cooking

If you enjoy cooking or baking, using your oven can be an excellent way to quickly heat up your apartment. Use the cold weather as an excuse to get creative with your cooking and test out that fall recipe you’ve been meaning to try!
